Frank James

Frank James is a Montreal-based multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and storyteller whose music combines heartfolt lyricism with docados of lived experience. Born on August 13, 1977, in Martintown, Ontario-a small farming community of roughly 2,000 people and one stoplight-Frank grew up surrounded by rural values, hard work, family, and music.

With French and Irish roots, Frank began learning music from his father and has now been playing for more than 35 years. From the ages of 14 to 22, he performed alongside his cousin, learning hundreds of songs and developing the versatility, discipline, and musical instincts that would shape his career. After attending the University of Ottawa, Frank’s love of performance took him around the world as a musician with Club Med. Through that work, he lived and performed in France, Germany, Belgium, England, the Bahamas, and Tunisia. The people, cultures, relationships, and experiences he encountered abroad expanded his musical perspective and later became part of the emotional foundation of his songwriting.

At 25, following the end of his marriage, Frank transformed heartbreak into music and independently released his debut EP, Montreal to Paris in a Heartache. The project was recorded at Great Commission Studios in Cornwall, Ontario, and introduced a deeply personal songwriting style centred on love, distance, loss, and survival.

His second EP, Can’t Live Without ‘Em, was recorded at The Little Studio That Love Built in Montreal. The project was produced by Andrew David, an accomplished guitarist and pianist whose musicianship helped bring greater depth and texture to Frank’s evolving sound. Frank is currently working on Sweat. Strings & Scars at Muir’s Music Manor in Cornwall, Ontario. Produced by legendary guitarist Marc Muir, the project reflects the accumulated experiences of a life spent writing, travelling, performing, and starting over. Its title captures the physical effort, emotional honesty, and hard-earned resilience behind the music.

Now based in Montreal, Frank continues to write cinematic and emotionally charged songs about relationships, regret, resilience, hope, and the complicated roads people travel. His work carries the authenticity of an artist who has lived the stories he tells, inviting listeners to recognize pieces of their own lives in every lyric and melody.
